- Teaching Demo Requirement
As part of the IYRC volunteering application, candidates are required to submit a pre-recorded teaching demonstration. This is to help us evaluate your teaching ability when working with high school students.
Instructions:- Select any medical or health-related topic of your choice.
- Prepare a 15-minute lesson using PowerPoint slides.
- Record yourself delivering the lesson as if teaching a high school student (your recording should show both you and your slides).
- The recording will be used only for internal evaluation and will not be published or shared.
- Evaluation Criteria:
Your teaching demo will be assessed using the following rubrics:- Technical Accuracy – correctness and reliability of information
- Clarity & Organization – logical flow, structure, and clarity of ideas
- Communication – ability to engage and explain effectively
- Instructional Method – use of appropriate teaching strategies
- Interaction – demonstration of how you would engage students

IYRC has an annual Tokyo Explore Program, Medicine and Research Summer Program, STEM Winter Program, ACComPLISHED Community Health Program, Medical Humanities, as well as 2 conferences and programming throughout the year. We have plenty of opportunities for you to volunteer both synchronously and asynchronously teaching, learning health topics, or exploring Japan!
Stay safe, have fun, and immerse yourself in a new culture.
Volunteers who want more flexibility with the timing can still volunteer. They will not be eligible for the stipends mentioned above and can choose to pay a subsidized fee of $500 for the Japan trip.
All volunteers will also be responsible for their own flight/ lodging/ outside of programming activities.

- Explore Tokyo's vibrant cityscape and landmarks during guided tours.
- Be a welcoming and supportive presence for students joining the group.
- On Saturday, serve as a moderator at the University of Tokyo conference, where you'll listen to presentations and engage with the speakers by asking insightful questions.
- Take part in the International Collaboration Exchange Program (ICEP) and connect with partners from Keio University and Tokyo Women's Medical University.
- You're welcome to extend your trip to explore more of Japan outside the official program dates!
- Volunteer during the year over zoom/ in-person days at Columbia
